Thanks, Mike! Staying true to form, you've created a list that makes me (once again) rearrange my Netflix queue!

Sandrine Bonnaire .... Adore her. (I almost put Agnes Varda on my dinner guest list!)
Ditto Irene Dunne and Mizz Stanwyck.

Need to edumacate myself more so I can learn who the other lovely ladies are.

What's your tops NYC theater, Mike? The whole list was based on personal associations, so I couldn't avoid the dangerous Film Forum. And seriously, I've seen way too many great films there to leave it off.

Over Film Forum? Walter Reade, Anthology, and BAM, for starters... I love a lot of what they show at Film Forum, but it remains such a disagreeable place to see a movie. I think I even prefer MoMA.

Is that Bonnaire chick really that ugly or is it just a bad picture? And I noticed Tati was on Lisa's list. What did y'all go in together and decide that at least one of your favorites had to be, well, less than beguiling?

Maggie,

I do feel it incumbent to stand up for one of my selections, Mdme. Bonnaire. While the photo I selected may not represent her at her absolute most attractive, she can be a very seductive woman. If you don't believe me, see "A nous amours" - striking to say the least in her teenage years - or "Est/Ouest," not the greatest film, but she's quite attractive in it. Besides which, this is a favorite leads, not most beautiful actresses list.

Also on your dismissal of Tati's attractiveness: no you didn't.

Hi Michael,
From your list, my favorites would be Setsuko Hara and Barbara Stanwyck. Other female leads I like would include Yelena Kuzmina and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Peter, Yelena Kuzmina (By the Bluest of Seas) is also one of my all-time favorites. Perhaps so much so that one might consider her exclusion an oversight.
